As I am sure everyone knows, municipal elections are taking place across Ontario on October 27th. The Ontario Landowners Association (OLA) is very involved in the process – several of our members are running for council and those that are not running are assisting candidates by going out and door knocking, putting up sings, and helping out financially.
It has never been more important to get involved in the democratic process. With provincial regulations, policies, and guidelines being pushed at us from every direction, we need municipal councils that are going to stand up for us. Landowner groups across Ontario have been engaging their municipal councils in a dialogue to educate them on what they need to know about property standards, tree cutting bylaws, official plans, conservation authorities, and more. Some get it; many do not.
Elizabeth (Liz) Marshall, the OLA’s chief researcher, has written extensively about municipal bylaws and how they must comply with superior laws. Her reports have been used by Landowner delegates at municipal meetings with the result that, with new information, council often makes the decision to NOT implement a bylaw.
The OLA is hosting, through it Chapters, public meetings where Liz will be the guest speaker, four of which are listed below. At the meeting in Deep River, Liz will be making a presentation on LAND PATENTS and the Ottawa River Heritage Designation. At the remaining three, she will be speaking about what municipal councils need to know about superior Acts and how bylaws may be violating these laws.
