Good Evening. I am brand new to this forum. I own a farm in Hamilton, Ontario and I recently cut down/clear cut about 180 trees in a two acre area. I did this to create more farm land because to me it seemed to be a cheaper option than buying more land. I got all the trees cut and stacked and was working on grinding all the stumps and had about 75 stumps left to grind when a Hamilton By-Law Officer came and put a stop work order on me. We are now apparently facing up to a $1,000 fine per tree which has me a bit panicked because I don't have that type of cash. The farmer next door then alerted me to The Ontario Landowners Association and I found this site. I had never heard of it before. I thought my land was my land and all the trees on it were mine. I now find myself in a legal quandary that is keeping me awake at night and wonder what to do. I know I am new and not a member (yet) of the OLA, but I need help. Is there any advice anyone here can offer me? When did my land quit being my land? Thanks for any help offered.
